To ensure all members of our community have the flexibility to participate in the upcoming presidential election, Howard University has updated its operational schedule for Monday, November 4, through Thursday, November 7.  

Please read this update in its entirety. It provides clarity for faculty, staff, and students on the University's operational and instructional status.   

As we continue to plan next week’s activities in collaboration with external national and local entities, please know that our operational communications are dynamic and will be updated regularly to keep you informed of any changes.

Monday, November 4, 2024 

  • Operational status — The physical campus is open to essential personnel only. 
  • Classes scheduled for online instruction will proceed normally in a virtual environment.    
  • All classes will be held via online modality. Students who usually attend classes face to face or via hybrid modality should contact their instructors for further instructions.    
  • Postdoctoral specialty clinics with appointments will remain as scheduled. All other services will be closed.    
  • The remote workday for all non-instructional services will proceed within the normal hours of operation.    

Tuesday, November 5, 2024 – Election Day  

  • Operational status — The University’s main and west campuses will be closed. 
  • Essential and critically essential personnel are expected to be on campus. Please contact your supervisor for additional guidance.  
  • No classes will be held. 

Wednesday, November 6, 2024 

  • Classes usually scheduled for online instruction will proceed normally in a virtual environment.    
  • All classes will be held via online modality. Students who usually attend classes face to face or via hybrid modality should contact their instructors for further instructions.    
  • Postdoctoral specialty clinics with appointments will remain as scheduled. All other services will be closed.    
  • The remote workday for all non-instructional services will proceed within the normal hours of operation.    

 Thursday, November 7, 2024 

  • Classes usually scheduled for online instruction will proceed normally in a virtual environment.    
  • All classes will be held via online modality. Students who usually attend classes face to face or via hybrid modality should contact their instructors for further instructions.    
  • Postdoctoral specialty clinics with appointments will remain as scheduled. All other services will be closed.    
  • The remote workday for all non-instructional services will proceed within the normal hours of operation.    


Howard University Hospital will maintain normal operations throughout Election Week. 

Normal operations will resume on Friday, November 8, 2024.  

Please note that the operational changes mentioned above apply specifically to Howard University students and personnel. Essential employees and non-Howard University contractors are advised to consult with their supervisors regarding their schedules, as this guidance may not apply in the same way.
