Howard Election Week Safety
As we prepare to host the Harris-Walz campaign’s election event, we acknowledge the historic significance of this occasion, and the responsibility with which we have been entrusted. As President Vinson shared earlier today, “this is a crucial moment in our history,” especially as we reflect on our commitment to civic engagement and leadership. We understand that this election cycle may bring feelings of uncertainty and anxiety, and we want to assure you that the safety and well-being of our campus community and guests are our highest priorities.
Safety Measures and Resources
To ensure a safe environment, the Howard University Department of Public Safety (DPS) is coordinating with local law enforcement and federal agencies to implement extensive security measures tailored for high-profile public events. These include enhanced surveillance and crowd management strategies, vehicular road closures, controlled access points, and rapid response.
Key safety protocols include:
1. Thorough Security Screenings: All attendees will experience multiple layers of screening, conducted by specialized teams trained for events of this scope and significance.
2. Increased Monitoring: Real-time monitoring will be conducted with surveillance technology and strategically placed officers across critical areas.
3. Collaborative Efforts with Partner Agencies: DPS is collaborating closely with local and federal agencies, including the Secret Service, to ensure seamless communication and fully unified law enforcement operations.
4. Enhanced Security Measures: Both uniformed and covert officers – along with intelligence, surveillance, controlled access points, and rapid response capabilities – will be in place to address any situations that may occur.
5. Campus-Wide Enhanced Safety Measures: Additional safety resources will be allocated to residence halls and facilities frequently used by students during this period.
